Jodie Tapper - Soul Flexible Online App and Soul Flexible Studio

In the latest episode, I had the pleasure to talk to Jodie Tapper of the Soul Flexible App and Soul Flexible Studio in Harrisdale, Western Australia (and my first guest from WA!)

The Soul Flexible App offers online access to classes run by fully certified Pilates instructors and educators from around Australia. These instructors come from diverse backgrounds and training schools, but share a common passion for delivering high-quality Pilates classes on demand.

I’m really excited to talk with an entrepreneur that is doing something different by building a business online, where the potential is vast, but the competition is real! In this interview we talk about how Jodie is carving out a niche in her corner of the internet.

(and look out for Wunda Chair and Tower classes that I will be filming for the app soon!)

In this interview we talk about:

  • How Jodie got into Pilates after an injury in her corporate career.

  • Why she decided to start an Online App and how Soul Flexible came to fruition with the help of her business (and life) partner

  • How her mentors have shaped her as a teacher

  • How she has struggled with burnout and feelings of isolation and how she has worked through it

  • How she has worked through limiting beliefs to launch the app

  • How she combines running a home studio with developing the App.

  • The hard work (and technology headaches) that comes with the territory of launching an app.

  • How the demographic for the app has changed over time.

  • How she collaborates with teachers to build the app

  • How she sees her business growing in 2 and 5 years

  • Her thoughts on the current state of the Pilates industry

More about Jodie:

Hello, I’m Jodie, the co-founder of Soul Flexible, a thriving local Pilates

studio and now a growing Pilates App with a team of dedicated teachers

across Australia. My journey into Plates teaching began at the Pilates Fitness

Institute in Perth, where I taught for nearly four years before opening my

own studio, Vital Wellness Pilates, in 2016. In 2020, driven by my love for

nature and a desire to align my business with my personal values, I

relocated my studio to Harrisdale, Perth. This transition marked the

beginning of my online teaching business, which has continued to grow over

the past four years.

Before Pilates, I had a rewarding career in Marketing and Event

Management, backed with a Bachelor’s degree in Marketing and Post Grad in

Communications. After a decade behind a desk, a repetitive use injury led

me to discover Pilates, which was a natural fit due to my background as a

competitive gymnast and lover of competitive sport.

My passion for movement and gymnastics was reginited as I pursued my

Matwork certification with Stott Pilates and later the Advanced Diploma of

the Pilates Method with PITC in 2017, studying under renowned mentors

Katrina Edwards and Kath Banks. An experience that shaped my teaching

and encouraged me to find my own voice as a teacher.

After 8 years of teaching Pilates, I found myself seeking a different approach

to movement. I had a habit of bracing that was deeply ingrained from my

gymnastic days that created a few injuries. This led me to venture into

Yoga, completing my 200-hour Yoga Teacher Training in Bali, Indonesia.

Yoga opened new doors for my body and mind, allowing me to explore

movement in a softer, more intuitive way.

This practice also led me to learn more about breathwork, mindfulness, and

nervous system regulation, areas I am deeply passionate about. I like to

bring a mix of my learnings and experiences into my Pilates teaching,

helping clients deepen their movement practice and connecting more fully

with their bodies and minds.

Outside of my work, I love to travel locally or overseas to explore new

cultures or places; and enjoy delicious food. My personal and professional

journey is driven by a desire to always be learning, growing and challenging

myself; as well as sharing the transformative power of movement with

others.
